We believe in making tea good, simple, and fun — even if you’re new to the world of loose leaf brewing. We were inspired by the unfussy tea breaks we’d enjoy with family on return visits to China, and wondered what a modern tea break would look like if we put together our favorite elements: one part gong fu tea ceremony (a cherished daily tradition in Chaozhou, where co-founder Diana’s family is from), one part bright and playful designs (our preferred approach to home decor, and our other co-founder Ayumi’s specialty), and one part welcome committee for new loose leaf drinkers (we believe tea is tastiest when shared!). And of course, we always knew our teas had to be both delicious and responsibly grown.
So that’s how Three Gems Tea was born! To realize our vision, we’ve partnered with family farms in China and Taiwan that embrace holistic growing practices to produce bold and fragrant oolong teas, and worked with a small ceramics studio in Jingdezhen (China’s ceramics capital) that helped us create the colorful gong fu tea set of our dreams.
In addition to running Three Gems Tea, Ayumi is also an artist based in Tokyo and New York, and Diana is a cookbook author (and general food enthusiast) living in Los Angeles.
Our single-origin loose leaf teas are grown without synthetic fertilizers and pesticides on family farms in China and Taiwan. We decided to start our collection with oolong teas because they're so expressive! Made from semi-oxidized Camellia sinensis leaves, oolong falls between the more commonly known green (unoxidized) and black (fully oxidized) teas, and is roasted to varying degrees.
