FARMBODY SKIN CARE
Nourish your hide from head to hoof with the healthiest skin care in the Hudson Valley.
Finding my niche among the giants.
Skin care is available everywhere. It’s a highly competitive crowded space. Giant skin care companies have deep pockets, big research and development departments, literally big departments for everything. So what made me think I could make something better than the behemoths with my short pockets and a department of 1? Simple. I had to…
My story is one of necessity and survival.
For over a decade I was a medical massage therapist, a spa owner, a nail technician and completely self employed. My hands were my living. Out of nowhere, I developed contact dermatitis with profusely itchy, oozing skin. I can't even tell you how awful it was. Work became unbearable. I went to the dermatologist and they put me on topical steroids but the problem just continued and you can’t live on that stuff! I went through skin testing and they couldn’t figure it out. My skin was thinning on the steroids and the condition of my hands was not improving: it was absolutely maddening. In order to save my hands, my sanity and my career I decided to do my own research and so the journey began.
I became an ingredient sleuth and a dermatitis slayer.
I literally get excited about dissecting ingredient lists. I discovered a website ewg.org that educates people about the potential hazards of ingredients and the potential for skin irritation. It also lets you know if ingredients are environmental toxins, posing a risk to aquatic life. I took everything I was coming in contact with and ran it through the website to look for known irritants. I was determined to solve this problem and save my career.
The more I learned the angrier I became.
Skin Care Marketing 101: "Dermatologist Tested", "Dermatologist Recomended", "Carries the seal of approval from the National Association for Eczema"...
So, I read the labels bearing these quotes then I run the ingredients through the site and I see that these big companies are putting known skin irritants into the products that are supposed to help with my skin irritation! AAAhhhh. How dare they! It made me madder than a mule chewing a mouthful of bubblebees! Something had to be done.
I dusted off the chemistry and botany books from college. I traveled to take classes from some of the best makers in the industry. I took online courses and I dove in whole hog to manufacture the best natural skin care in the industry.
I will spare you all the details and just cut to the chase. I healed my hands and in the process I developed a line of products to help others. My business brings me satisfaction beyond belief. Ingredients Matter!
At Farmbody we have a nose to tail philosphophy for helping you nourish your hide from head to hoof. Every single sustainable ingredient we source has a benefit and a purpose for helping your skin or hair. My business is located in the heart of the black dirt region in Orange County NY. For those of you who don't know, we are surrounded by farms with the best dirt around. I believe in supporting local farms and so we get many of our ingredients locally: goat's milk, honey, beeswax, hemp oil, sunflower oil, apple cider vinegar, hops and craft beer (yes, hops & barley are good for your hair and skin). For ingredients we can't find locally we support american farms by using meadowfoam seed oil, chamomile, calendula, tallow, daikon, colloidal oatmeal, extracts from lycopene, kale, quinoa, milk, carrot, lemon, yogurt and more. We use lactobacillus and radish root ferment filtrate to safely preserve our products because preservation is a must and so is saving your skin in the process. Our rich butters and oils, not available in the US, are sourced from sustainable farms from around the globe through distributors who care about the environment and the welfare of farmers around the world.
You can find me at farmer's markets, festivals and at our store. I am a very hands on owner.
Nearly every day I get referrals from satisfied customers who want to help others. I answer emails, I pick up the phone, I meet people at markets and I see people at our store in Middletown NY on the weekends at the Emporium Square Aritsan Market. I genuinely love what I do and I hope you feel the passion and the pride that goes into every product that we make.
I frequently get asked questions about my packaging. "Why do we have animals on the labels?" is a common question.
Very simple. I think it's fun and whimsical! I understand that my products contain high end ingredients and they should be selling for far more than what's on the market and so they should probably be in fancy bottles at big department stores, but that's not a reflection of who I am. I am a country girl at heart and I want to be sure that the people who need my help the most are able to afford Farmbody. The animals are our "spokes people" lol. I was lucky enough to have a talented local artist hand draw my animals and bring my ideas to life and I am grateful. We do a lot of business at Bethel Woods and that area so we hippied up the cows and put the goat in a flannel shirt just for fun. I love to see people smile and it certainly gets us noticed in the crowd.
Thank you for reading my story and thank you in advance for your business.
