Bespoke hats and millinery made by hand

Milliner: Hat maker

Jennifer is a milliner working and living in upstate New York.  She trained in the art of millinery in London while studying abroad during her college years. It was during that time that she found her passion and fell in love with the sculptural aspect of the hat and began her business upon graduating. She has been making hats for over two decades selling to high end retailers and private clients worldwide.

Jennifer's expertise highlights the elegance of her London training combined with her modern sensibility. Her choice of fabrics and attention to detail illustrates her artistry while maintaining wearability and function. Her hats are considered luxury wearable pieces. She is a long standing member and current vice president of The Milliners Guild and also works seasonally at New York Fashion week with Stephen Jones and Marc Jacobs.

Each hat is made by hand using traditional millinery techniques. Jennifer creates each piece from beginning to end from the finest millinery straws and fur felts available. She uses steam and hand blocks shapes pulling felts and straws over wooden blocks that have been collected over the years. She then completes each piece by hand using a curated collection of vintage and modern trimmings.

Jennifer is happy sharing her process with customers, telling the origins of handcrafted flowers and vintage french ribbons as well as the process of the artisans who weave the straw and felt the wool.  She feels that for the customer to understand the high end nature of her work, explaining the process from raw materials to the end product and all of the work in between gives them confidence in their purchase.

Jennifer works closely with customers to find the perfect hat and shape to fit their needs and lifestyle which can range from casual every day to racewear and special occasion. A hat creates confidence and is an extension of oneself that completes the wearer much like punctuation in a sentence.

Buying a hat should be an experience and wearing one should be the journey.

Bespoke and custom appointments are available.  Gift certificates are available.

Frequently Asked Questions

-To measure your head:

A hat should be comfortable and you should forget it is on your head while you are wearing it.

Measure in inches around your head using a measuring tape.  Measure just about your ears and eyebrows around the fullest part of the back of you rhead. Make sure it is not too loose or too tight. I tend to keep my finger tip between the tape and head.  This is your measurement in inches.  I will try to get as close to this as possible.

Questions about sizing contact me via email at jenniferhoertz@aol.com

Wear and tear can happen.  Jennifer can repair, reshape and spruce up your well loved hats.  Contact her to set up an appointment and for pricing.
