Stony Brook WholeHeartedFoods

Stony Brook WholeHeartedFoods

We are one of the only Northeast makers of pepitas seed snacks, culinary oils and seed powders made exclusively from US grown seeds.

Stony Brook WholeHeartedFoods is a Geneva New York based company that makes seed snacks and culinary oils, freshly made in small batches. These products are all natural, made with locally sourced ingredients from upstate NY family farms. Stony Brook has earned certifications as non-GMO and organic for many of its products, and is a vegan, nut free and gluten free facility.

Local farm sourcing

Most folks don't realize that the majority of pumpkin seeds sold in the US are from China, as featured in the New York Times article "Pumpkin Seeds, Made in America" where Florence Fabrikant explains we are one of only two sources of US grown seed in the US.

We obtain seeds from our farmer partners after harvest each year, roasting them in our barrel roaster for either seed snacks or expeller-pressed oil.

A local production kitchen

Our production kitchen is located in the Finger Lakes area of New York, in one of the most picturesque areas of upstate NY.  It is as near to the source of our ingredients as possible, to maximize freshness, flavor, transparency to the farm, and overall quality of our products.  Unlike many specialty food manufacturers, we make and package everything ourselves in our Geneva facility, we do not use a commercial copacker.

    Surprisingly Good

As a longtime fan of EVOO olive oil I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious butternut squash seed oil is! Give it a try but I warn you, you may never return to using olive oil!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are your products really grown and made on American soil?

A: Yes!  All of our products are sourced directly from farmers we know and work with regularly.

Q: How do you use squash seed oil?  Can I cook with it?

A: Butternut squash seed oil is very versatile, with a high smoke point similar to peanut oil but also works well as a drizzling oil.  It has a slightly nutty, buttery taste that goes well on roasted squash, sauteed carrots or broccoli.  Also great drizzled in squash or pea soup, or on the grill with grilled peppers, zucchini.  Our pumpkin seed oil is much more delicate, with a lower smoke point, so we recommend using the pumpkin seed oil as a finishing oil over vegetables or soups after cooking is complete.

Q: I am allergic to nuts. Are your snacks allergen free?

A: Our facility is completely free of soy, gluten, tree nuts, peanuts, shellfish, and dairy. For those with an allium sensitivity, we do use garlic powder in our chili butternut pepitas.

Q: How long will the oil last in my cupboard?

A: Freshly pressed oil is like fresh beer or bread, as the flavor is optimal right after bottling.  We make our oils in small batches to maximize freshness. We recommend you use your oil within one or two months of opening, after this period the oil does not spoil but will gradually lose flavor.  If you do not plan on using your oil in this timeframe, keep it in the refrigerator to extend shelf life, though the oil may become cloudy as it cools.

Q: Is your packaging recyclable?

A: We are working with our packaging supplier to develop a new fully recyclable pouch for our pepitas, but at this time the pouches cannot be recycled.  However, the packing peanuts that arrive with your order are compostable.
